I am back in Ethiopia right now leading another photo tour to this fascinating country. The highlight for me is the Omo River Valley in which there are 16 primitive tribes inhabiting a vast area. My favorite tribe for photography is the Surma. The girls and women are well known for their colorful and creative body and face decorations. These are not put on for tourists. They adorn themselves this way daily. For this portrait, I used a 100-500mm Canon zoom set to 240mm, and the camera settings were 1/250, f/8, and 640 ISO. My favorite lighting for outdoor portraiture is soft and diffused from an overcast sky. The subject doesn’t squint from a bright sun and there are no harsh shadows or blown out highlights.
