My first trip to Tahiti was in 1989. I was shooting film with a Mamiya RZ 67, a medium format camera, and I wanted to take aerials of Bora Bora for my stock photo agency. Through a series of phone calls and with the help of my hotel, I arranged to have a plane from Raiatea, a neighboring island, fly to Bora Bora to pick me up for the hour flight. Shooting through an open window in the 4-seat plane, I was able to get some beautiful shots. Contrary to most landscape photography, shooting tropical water is best done at midday with the sun out. This is when the multitude of blue tones in the water shows up best. My settings were unrecorded, but they were probably 1/400th of a second (this was the fastest shutter speed on this camera body), f/5.6, and I used Fujichrome Velvia 50.
