My last photo tour to Iceland (oriented for drone photography) was in August, 2024. As I was driving from the airport to the hotel in Reykjavik I saw to the right of the highway a volcano erupting. The Icelanders weren't paying any attention to it like it was no big deal, but it was a really big deal to me! I asked my driver to stop, got a few shots, and then the next day just before the tour officially began a couple of my tour participants and I hired a helicopter to get some arials of this remarkable phenomenon. I'd only seen spewing lava one other time 2009 during a Costa Rica tour, so this was pretty special. The columns of lava were probably 200 or 300 feet. My camera settings were 1/2000, f/6.3, and 800 ISO. I used a fast shutter speed to mitigate the vibration of the helicopter as well as to freeze the lava shooting into the air. We were flying at about 500 feet in altitude, so to fill the frame with the action I used a 100-500mm zoom. This picture was taken at 451mm. My next Iceland tour is this August and I'm wondering if I'll get lucky again. Either way, Iceland is a stunning photo destination.
