I took this shot of glacial ice on the Ice Beach along the southern coast of Iceland. I used a neutral density filter which enabled me, in conjunction with a lens aperture of f/16, to choose a shutter speed of 30 full seconds. My 400mm focal length threw the ocean in the background out of focus (even with the small aperture), and the white blur in front of the ice is ocean foam in motion during the long exposure. The large chunks of ice were so heavy that they didn’t move even though they were being pounded by the surf so they remained sharp. I really love photographing blue ice, and here I find the contrast between the sharp ice and the blurred water quite compelling. The camera was set to 400 ISO.
