The idea of wearing lip plates among the Mursi and Surma tribes in Ethiopia originated to protect women and girls from being kidnapped and enslaved by black slave traders. It was assumed that the disfigurement would make them undesirable. It has evolved into a sign of beauty, and the females with the largest lip plates are seen as the most attractive. When they eat, the women take the plates out. I used a 24-105mm lens for this shot, and the settings were 1/200, f/5.6, and 500 ISO.
