There are seven distinct species of sea turtles in the world, and four of them use the beaches around Banyuwangi, East Java, Indonesia, to lay their eggs. As soon as the babies hatch and crawl out of the nest, they make the perilous journey to the ocean surf -- safe from birds but terribly vulnerable to scores of predators. Only about one in a thousand make it to adulthood. This little guy is an olive ridley, the second smallest and most abundant sea turtle in the world. I used a 24-105mm lens set to 105mm for the early morning shot, and the settings were 1/200, f/16, and 2000 ISO. I had to use a small aperture, and consequently a relatively high ISO, because with magnification comes a loss of depth of field. Everything had to be sharp from edge to edge, so I had to regain the lost DOF with f/16.
