This is a picture of soap. Specifically, Dawn dishwashing liquid. To get this shot, first I mixed Dawn in a bowl of water. I then took the plastic lid of a Tupperware container and cut out the middle of it. I was left with the thick frame. This was dipped into the soap solution, and the soap film stretched across the plastic lid. In a few seconds, the colors appeared. They slowly swirled -- it was cool to watch. To photograph it, I placed a white poster board behind the soap film (this is essential) and then angled the plane of the soap film at a 45 degree angle away from the camera. I then placed a flash into a medium sized soft box, and this was aimed directly at the soap such that the soap film and the soft box were parallel to each other. I had to take pictures quickly because in about 20 to 30 seconds, the soap film broke and I had to start again. No Photoshop enhancement was involved. My settings were 1/160, f/22, and 100 ISO, and I used a 100mm focal length. Because the plane of the digital sensor is oblique to the soap, I had to use a small aperture for depth of field.
